Series Introduction

“The Web3 revolution has reached a boiling point in Asia. Our goal is to guide investors and founders in navigating each culturally-nuanced market. Here we draw the analogy of a hotpot. While every culture has its own variation, the fundamentals remain consistent - the regulatory environment lays the foundation as the soup base, the investment landscape and key players signify the main ingredients that impart flavor to each distinctive hot pot, and consumer adoption exemplifies etiquettes that shape a successful experience.”

– Foreword from Maria, Cathleen, Alexandra

The What

This research series is designed to guide western investors and founders in making informed, strategic entries into APAC in the realm of Web3. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive evaluation of each country’s Web3 progress, offer insights that are currently missing from mainstream coverage and form a community to share resources in making these markets more accessible.

The ultimate markers of our success will be when our guide

  • helps an investor make a confident decision to enter these markets,

  • supports a founder in expanding operations based on our insights, and

  • becomes a go-to resource for crypto enthusiasts looking to explore new opportunities.

The Why

When we decided to write about East Asia, it wasn’t a decision made from afar. Like a journalist dedicated to uncovering the truth, we were actively on the ground at key crypto conferences surveying founders and investors on markets that piqued their interest. From there we selected three markets that stood out - Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong. These markets are highlighted for their rapid regulatory advancements, growing market signals and consumer adoption.

As professionals working in this ever-changing industry, we collectively work with over 60+ startups. We deeply care for these teams and want to highlight opportunities for founders and investors to capture. We want them to succeed.

We recognize that there are significant challenges to understanding the markets such as information gaps, limited knowledge of the economy, and lack of cultural adaptation. To effectively guide them, we need to analyze the markets ourselves to help them break into new markets. We want our community of founders to be empowered with the knowledge and insights necessary to make informed decisions. By sharing our observations and experiences, we aim to provide a framework that identifies actual opportunities and helps founders navigate the complexities of entering new markets.

The How

The foundation of our content series is the long-form market research on each market. Our repors will build upon a deep understanding of the economic complexities, cultural nuances, and strategic opportunities. In writing each of our market reports, we’ve:

  • Interviewed 10+ key builders & investors in each market;

  • Spent 20+ hours gathering data and analyzing each country’s macroeconomy;

  • Summarized 7+ hours of dialog and cross-referenced intelligence with key local players;

  • Reviewed report with 15+ validators actively investing and/or building in each target market;

Each research paper delves into the countries’ evolving relationship with Web3. We follow a consistent format to:

  • Set the scene of its Web3 history

  • Narrate the current regulatory environment and its impact

  • Examine the investment landscape & trends

  • Analyze key players from enterprises to consumers
